The Insight Medical Careers Difference

Monday, 12 Sep, 2022

Insight Medical Careers is a boutique career coaching service with a difference – namely my 30+ year medical career that has given me extensive experience and expertise to guide and support people towards a career they love. I also have a  formidable little black book of connections, and I love to use it!

Whether you’re choosing a specialty, applying for a training program, need support to re-enter the medical workforce or even thinking of leaving medicine altogether, career coaching can be a secret weapon to empower you with knowledge and skills to succeed.

I launched Insight Medical Careers in 2016 as throughout my career I’d seen so many doctors struggling with their career decisions. I was out on my lonesome as a career coach with such a specialised niche, as there was nobody else offering career coaching specifically for doctors. Almost a decade later, there are quite a few medical career coaches around and that’s wonderful, as I believe one of the most critical factors to a successful coaching engagement and subsequent results is finding someone who’s the right fit. Choice in both coaches and coaching approaches hopefully means there’s someone for everyone.

So what’s different about IMC? I’m a doctor with over 30 years’ experience in the health system. I’m a specialist medical administrator but, as I’ve written about before, my career has been anything but conventional. I started in hospital administration and was immediately drawn to working with junior doctors and nurturing them early in their careers. I then moved into medical education at a hospital and state level. For many years I worked for the NSW Medical Board and dealt frequently with doctors whose careers were challenged because of health or other issues. And I worked for one of the medical defence organisations as a medico-legal advisor, which gave me a whole other perspective on the challenges many doctors face.

Throughout all this experience, there were some common themes. I’m a very optimistic person and my inclination is always to help people see the positives and find a way forward. I’m genuine and authentic. I have the ability to connect with people wherever I go. Of course, after so many years in so many roles across the breadth of the health sector I have an amazing network of people whose knowledge I can draw on. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll know someone who does.

I’m also someone who’s practical and down to earth. I’ll always choose the simple over the complicated and convoluted: if I can break it down to 3 dot points I’m happy! I look for realistic solutions and actions that you can get started on straight away. I love connecting people so, if I’ve got someone in my network who I think will be able to help, I’ll make the introduction.

I’ve been where you are. I’ve done the specialist training, faced the Fellowship exams and have even questioned whether medicine was for me. Today, I feel like I have the best job in the world because it’s allowed me to draw on all the experience I’ve had and all the people I’ve met. I spend my days talking to people and helping them find a way forward. Who wouldn’t love that? If career coaching sounds like something that could help you elevate your career and get some clarity on a path forward, please get in touch and we can talk about how we might work together.
